Position Description:

Currently, we are seeking qualified candidates for a Senior Supplier Development Engineer opening to join our Suppliers Quality & Development organization.


Day to Day

A day in the life of a Senior Supplier Development Engineer involves the analysis of the quality performance and capability of Suppliers and the definition of actions to enhance supplier’s performance. In another day you might be discussing the quality strategy for this commodity space with the Commodity Sourcing Manager and the Engineering Leads involved on the development of the technology and suppliers roadmap. You will also visit suppliers to perform process characterization and to review supplier’s progress on the qualification of new parts using APQP / FMEA / MSA / SPC / PPAP and Run@Rate. In case of critical quality issues impacting product performance in the field or at one of Whirlpool’s manufacturing divisions, you might have to go to that division to perform a DOE, apply problem solving techniques and address the resolution of the issues with suppliers, capturing the root cause analysis and problem solving on a 8D Report . The assessment of supplier’s capability and qualification levels, as well as the definition of plans to develop suppliers in the needed areas are also responsibility of this Supplier Development Engineer.


What You Will Do

  • Define the Quality Strategy within your commodity space. Communicate and align that strategy with Commodity Sourcing Managers and Engineering Leads
  • Actively participate at the MVT (Material Value Teams), sharing the supplier’s quality strategy to support supplier selection and taking accountability on supplier development activities.
  • Work with suppliers to ensure flawless new product launches at the required volume rate, applying methodologies like APQP, FMEA, MSA, SPC, PPAP, Run@Rate.
  • Champion Critical Parameters Management (CPM) with suppliers identified in your commodity space.
  • Be assigned as the lead Supplier Development Engineer on the development of new projects.
  • Conduct risk and capability assessment to assign appropriate actions and tools for supplier development.
  • Perform technical assessments at supplier’s facilities.
  • Lead Manufacturability Reviews and Production Readiness Reviews to ensure quality requirements are understood by suppliers and that supplier’s manufacturing process is capable for the production of parts to the specification and at the required volume rate.
  • Conduct Quality System Audits on new suppliers.
  • Conduct Process Audits, Process Characterization and Run@Rate at the supplier’s facility.
  • Drive Quality improvement with suppliers through the use of structured tools like 8D Reports, DDDW, Six Sigma and Lean principles.
  • Manage information on supplier’s quality performance metrics in the field and at Whirlpool’s manufacturing divisions (SIR, PPM, CAL). Use that information to support focus supplier development, the definition of the commodity quality strategy and the education of process partners on supplier’s quality performance.
  • Drive a quality culture aligned to Zero Defect with suppliers and process partners of the Rubber commodity space.




What You Need to Succeed

  • 7+ Years of overall experience, with 2-3 years in Suppliers Quality and/or Manufacturing
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with confirmed experience in Quality and Manufacturing are preferred
  • Previous experience in all or some of the following
  • Technical knowledge about Die Casting & Rubber quality acceptance criteria
  • Quality, Manufacturing and Supplier Development
  • Supplier Development processes, APQP, FMEA, MSA, SPC, PPAP, Run@Rate
  • Quality Systems and supplier audit, ISO9000, TS16949
  • Problem solving and quality improvement with the use of Six Sigma, DOEs, 8D Reports, Drill Deep Drill Wide, Six Sigma and Lean Principles
  • Ability to think independently and be a thought leader, professional behavior, and other qualities that include decisiveness, communications, confidence and self-initiative
  • Ability to participate within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to meet critical deadlines
  • Travel required (40-60%), domestic and internationally
