Director of Project Management


Role Overview:


To lead multiple cross-functional Research / Technical Project Teams to successful completion. May act in place of Head of Portfolio and Project Management


Principal Accountabilities:

1. Oversees leadership of multiple cross-functional Research or Technical Core Project Teams (CPT)

  • Supervises one or more (Senior) Project Managers (PM) who lead cross-functional matrixed CPTs or Expert Teams; may lead the CPT themselves, especially during the initiation phase or for very complex projects

  • The Director is primarily responsible for the strategic direction of the projects while their PM reports are primarily responsible for operational excellence

  • They or their direct reports achieve the following:

    • Chairs CPT meetings for efficient and effective outcomes, ensure Minutes and Action/Decision log are maintained

    • Develops and maintains all necessary team documents (Project Scope, Project Schedule, Project Budget, Risk Management Plan) using appropriate software and templates

    • Monitors cross-functional project activities for adherence to milestone timelines, deliverables and budget against approved plan using appropriate software and tools

    • Maintain integrated project plan to track risk management, opportunities and milestones; ensure continuous consistency with project strategy.

    • Leads cross-functional teams through different stages, using appropriate tools to ensure the team is operating effectively and efficiently regardless of the project stage

    • Prepares team to pass through Stage Gates, bringing in additional functional expertise as required

    • Guides cross-functional team members in decision making and operating as a team.

    • Provides timely, accurate and objective project status reports or meeting minutes, using appropriate templates and providing the appropriate level of information for the target audience.

    • Prepares pre-read Reports and presentation materials (e.g., slides) for Project Review Committee (PRC) meetings using standardized templates and reporting tools and to high standard. Lead team presentation at PRC, inviting Subject Matter Experts (SME), who are typically members of CPT or RDLT, to present topics and issues as appropriate

    • Prepare presentation materials (slides) for Interim Review Committee meetings (IRC). Lead team presentation at IRC, inviting SME to present topics and issues as appropriate

    • Serve as neutral and objective facilitator to ensure open and transparent communication within the team, between team and functions, and to senior leadership.

    • For new Projects, works with Functional Head to obtain necessary functional resources for Project and helps establish functional project-related budget.

    • Interfaces with Functional Heads for resolution of issues as required


  • Specific to Director role in Liverpool

    • Oversees Project Management for Technical Projects to improve manufacturing of egg-based influenza vaccines in both Liverpool and Parkville (multiple projects will be involved)

    • Coordinates tech transfer of aQIV to Liverpool. This is a complex, extremely important and time-sensitive endeavour involving not only manufacturing but also Regulatory, Quality and external contract manufacturers

    • Oversees coordination of tech transfer of release assays for Rapivab to Liverpool


      2.    Portfolio Management

  • Contribute to portfolio management by taking a portfolio view of the projects under their leadership

  • Support objective portfolio discussions of the entire Seqirus portfolio.


    3.    Mentorship and Training

  • Create and implement Development Plans for direct reports

  • Coach, provide feedback and training to encourage development of less experienced PMs within PPM 

  • Support Head of PPM through

    • Running mentorship meetings, such as “lessons learned” and a Cross-site Community of Practise for Project Management

    • Continuously establishing and sharing best practices / tools


      4.    Provide other project management support as necessary

  • They or their direct reports achieve the following:

    • Provide Project Management for Working Groups or Expert Teams serving the CPT as necessary

  • Provide direct supervision or informal mentoring and on-the-job training to less experienced Project Managers

  • Provide support for Head of Portfolio and Project Management as required

  • Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Doctoral degree in life-sciences, medical-related sciences or public health with specialization in Project Management a plus.

  • 5+ years of directly relevant Project Management experience in the pharmaceutical industry, preferably vaccines.
