The role:

This is opportunity is based in our Jealotts Hill site within the Data Sciences, Data Solutions team working closely with our R&D organisation.  Syngenta is a complex organisation and this role entails a broad range of projects large and small, it requires clear vision and making the decision to develop internally the required technology or to look at external suppliers.  To be successful you will demonstrate good collaboration skills, able to build good relationships with your peers and stakeholders.


Role purpose:

  • To manage Syngenta’s Environmental Services Platform consisting of different IS Modules, services and partnership agreements in order to serve multiple Syngenta’s functions with shared environmental characterisation and related data services for internal and external use. Environmental Platform scope includes:
    • Data acquisition, integration, quality control, management and value exploitation.
    • Service and capability development and operation.
    • Application (software) and asset knowledge management (data and models).
    • Project and community support of environmental needs (consultancy, data acquisition and data stewardship).
  • To ensure the continued smooth operation of Syngenta’s existing Environmental service platform by working closely with the existing teams and vendors.

  • To ensure excellent IS services are provided to the Syngenta functions, aligned with external and internal best practice and managed to agreed service and quality levels.

  • To work with the business functions to create and agreed platform roadmap and to implement the roadmap to deliver new or improved service capabilities.

  • To manage the Platform operational budget and resources (suppliers & internal team).

  • To evaluate platform improvement opportunities, create business cases and seek investment buy in from platform sponsors.

  • To promote the platform and identify new opportunities.


  • Develop a Platform Strategy and relevant Products & Services.

  • Be accountable for the management of vendors to deliver enterprise ready platform services using ITIL methodology.


Experience & knowledge:

  • Degree or higher in Computer Science or Environmental Science with relevant experience.

  • Environmental data relevant to agriculture, including data quality lifecycle.

  • GIS technology and capabilities.

  • Have experience of one or more existing Products / technologies and business domains in R&D relevant to the Platform.

  • Current best practice in service / application management (ITIL & DevOps). 

  • Good understanding of SDLC methods including traditional waterfall and Agile (Scrum).

  • A good grasp of the culture and working practices of both IS and R&D stakeholders and an understanding of the value R&D gain from the using the product.

  • Good experience of working within or close to R&D within Syngenta or other strongly R&D oriented company and managing an IT operations team of 2 to 6 people.

  • Previous direct experience in a customer focused delivery management / service management role (or can show understanding of the needs and demands of such a role)

  • Experience in working across countries and cultures in order to achieve solutions, including with external vendors.

  • Due to the territory responsibilities some travel will be necessary – approximately 10%.
