About This Job:

We are currently seeking a principal crystallisation scientist to provide fundamental knowledge underpinning the efficient manufacture and formulation of Syngenta’s crop protection products. Leading a physical chemistry team spanning research, through development and into production requires expertise in applying quantitative crystallisation thermodynamics and kinetics to design and control particle processes. The role requires an ability to communicate across scientific and engineering disciplines, across geographically spread functions within Syngenta and to apply leading edge knowledge to enhance Syngenta’s competitiveness.


The role:

Working within our Process Studies Group the Principal Crystallisation Scientist will lead a team to support process development and research programmes; to provide understanding and novel technology for the improvement of new and existing products.  This role would suit an experienced and innovative Physical Scientist who enjoys leading project teams with a proactive style and is able to operate within our diverse organisation.


  • Identify and progress development initiatives to improve technological and manufacturing capability, cost and HS&E performance, under the direction of the +1 Manager, in support of the techno-commercial strategy of the Supply Chain, or the Development team for new products.

  • Identify and progress development, technology & science initiatives, including Strategic & Enabling Technology, to implement technology and IP strategies, exploring alternative routes, technologies and options for improved development & manufacture of products, active ingredients and intermediates.

  • Monitor external scientific advances (including IP) in areas of responsibility and identify and progress appropriate responses including contact/collaborations with academics as appropriate.

  • Plan and control own & team’s laboratory/semi-technical work to understand, develop and test new and improved manufacturing processes in order to meet agreed Supply Chain/Development targets.

  • Agree scope of work & support to Development teams, and proactively advise and support so that results can be implemented. Investigate and develop solutions to the more intractable chemical problems encountered in manufacture in order to achieve continued improvement of production performance.

  • Communicate with commercial, research, manufacturing, development and HS&E functions and participate in Global Supply teams in order to define and progress development plans.

  • Participate in project teams as the representative of Process Studies in order to supply the scientific judgement required to ensure that new products and processes are developed and established safely and effectively to meet Supply Chain cost, time and quality targets.

  • Ensure all work and information is stored in an electronic format, and that all work and its conclusions are properly reported.  Seek patent cover where appropriate in order to record and protect the intellectual property which arises from the efforts of the team.

  • Develop, train, motivate and coach the team to improve their performance and achieve higher professional standards. Assess performance.


Knowledge & Experience:

  • Chemistry: Educated to PhD standard in an area of physical chemistry or process engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • Knowledge of physical chemistry principles particularly crystallisation sciences, crystallography or particle processing. 
  • A quantitiative approach to experimentation with a good understanding of modelling and maths.
  • HS&E: Knowledge of systems and QA procedures and responsibility for compliance.   
  • Corporate knowledge and intellectual property: Fully aware of Syngenta and external prior art on existing processes and associated chemistry and patents in areas of responsibility. Awareness of the importance of the latter.

  • Supply Chain and financial awareness: Knowledge of costing systems, budgeting, financial targets and of the impact of T&P development work on Supply Chain performance.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in physical sciences and their application to organic chemistry systems (reactions and physical processes), process development, critical data analysis (statistics / experimental design), scale-up, plant establishment, manufacturing support.
  • Comprehensive experience and knowledge of laboratory/analytical work to enable realistic work targets to be set.
  • Staff supervision, target setting, training and development.
