Purpose
  • Provide specific specialist, scientific, chemical and process engineering expertise required to design and deliver work programmes defined by project or line manager
  • Responsible for identifying, initiating and implementing changes to established methodologies, protocols or systems. In particular, lead departmental experimental capability and best laboratory practice driving high standards of experimental quality and safety. Ensures leading edge technology utilising the best scientific know-how and knowledge of external technology
  • Provide technical leadership for effective input into group level prioritisation, planning and delivery of scientific work programmes in a safe and efficient manner
  • Lead department and group input into significant multi-disciplinary projects collaborating between the PSG group and cross Syngenta functions. Ensure maximum impact of scientific understanding through excellent and timely communication
  • Mentor, train and supervise staff in the detailed understanding of chemical & physical processes to achieve HS&E, capacity and cost targets as defined by Supply Chain and Development
 
Accountabilities
  • Leader of a small team, the job holder will have sufficient depth of experience to be recognised as a significant source of chemical engineering expertise for business success
  • Apply a combination of theoretical and applied knowledge to Physical Science projects in order to guide and lead delivery of improvements to technological and manufacturing capability, cost and SHE performance, under the direction of the +1 Manager, in support of the techno-commercial strategy of the Supply Chain, or the Development team for new products. Provide high quality practical advice and judgements by applying scientific method, theoretical knowledge and broad experience of physical science
  • Actively drive and engage cross functional, cross site T&E teams. Build relationships with key contacts in other T&E departments in pursuit of overall goals and objectives set by others. Participate in project teams as the representative of PSG and its groups in order to supply the breadth of scientific judgement required to ensure that new products and processes are developed and established safely and effectively to meet Supply Chain cost, time and quality targets
  • Understand the needs of Syngenta T&E functions and effectively communicate scientific understanding and direction to (process, formulation development and capital projects) to address these needs. Agree scope of work and advice on required support so that results can be implemented and investigated to develop solutions to difficult physical science problems. Provide technical input into group prioritisation and planning process
  • Communicate with commercial, research, manufacturing, development and SHE functions and participate in Global Supply and Development teams in order to define and progress plans
  •  Identify and progress development, technology & science initiatives, including Strategic & Enabling Technology, to implement technology and IP strategies, exploring alternative routes, new technologies and options for improved development & manufacture of products, active ingredients and intermediates. Develop new methodology where it is needed to solve critical physical science problems
  • Drive highest standards of laboratory practice and professionalism. Identify and implement HSE improvements within laboratory environment and act as a role model to colleagues in HSE best practice
  • Monitor external scientific and technology advances (including IP) in areas of responsibility and identify and progress appropriates responses including contact/collaborations with academics as appropriate. Use to raise experimental and process capability of the department and Syngenta
  • Ensure all work and information is stored in an electronic format, and that all work and its’ conclusions are properly reported and seek patent cover where appropriate in order to record and protect the intellectual property which arises from the efforts of the team
  • Lead, develop, train and motivate subordinates to improve technical and experimental capability and to achieve higher professional standards. Assess performance
  • Plan and deliver laboratory/semi-technical/modelling work of self and team to understand, develop and test new and improved manufacturing processes in order to meet agreed Supply Chain target
 
Education and critical knowledge required
  • Chemical or Process Engineering: Educated to BSc or MEng with significant post-graduate experience
  • Likely to have or apply for MIChemE / Chartered Engineer status. PhD a plus
  • Proven ability to carry out successfully the most difficult practical technical challenges in a timely manner
  • Hands-on experience in similar or related roles
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in chemical and process engineering and its application to Syngenta systems (reactions and physical processes), process development, critical data analysis (statistics / experimental design), scale-up, plant establishment, manufacturing support. Recognised by colleagues as one of the most able and productive physical scientists (including colleagues from other functions & sites)
  • Comprehensive experience and knowledge of laboratory/analytical/semi-tech work to enable realistic work targets to be set
  • Ability to deal effectively with staff at all levels within the organisation
  • Ability to plan and control activities over a number of months
  • Problem solving: Ability to analyse complex and diverse problem situations creatively leading to the generation and implementation of original solutions
  • Project management: Ability to plan, monitor and control work by project management techniques to maximise resource efficiency
  • Ability to work effectively in teams, influence and gain support
  • Information retrieval using library and database systems
  • HS&E: Knowledge of systems and QA procedures and responsibility for compliance.
