The team:


The Biology Support Group contributes to Syngenta’s business by providing plant, insect and pathogen material for use in chemical and biological research at Jealotts Hill (JH).  This research plays a pivotal role in the invention and development process for new active ingredients in particular this role supports herbicide research and development at JH.

 

The role:

  • You will follow a work programme identified by your lead, to carry out day-to-day production and maintenance of plant materials to a standard that meets customers’ requirements.

  • Effectively plan and coordinate specific tests within Plant Production.

  • Develop technical horticultural knowledge and skills through experience of a wide range of production techniques, training courses and attendance at team meetings.

  • Take responsibility for designated pieces of equipment, tasks and/or working areas on behalf of the team.

  • Identify areas for improvements in efficiency and contribute to problem solving in consultation with other team members and the Work Manager.

  • Contribute to safety performance by maintaining a clean and safe personal working environment. Comply with all safety procedures and HSE regulations.

  • Ensure compliance by self and others with DEFRA, CBD and HSE regulations on containment and use of genetically modified organisms and licensed pests/pathogens in glasshouses and growth rooms.

Qualifications

Experience & Education:

  • Excellent working knowledge of horticultural techniques including seed germination, plant propagation and maintenance. 

  • A recognised horticultural qualification (e.g. National Diploma or Degree level) would be a significant advantage.

  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office.

  • Good communication skills, both with internal stakeholders and colleagues.

  • Meeting deadlines and supply high quality materials.

  • Open to learning new skills in data handling in a research environment.

  • Accurately record and collate data on plant materials.

  • Good team player and be able to train others in a range of horticultural techniques such as seed propagation.

 

Please note:

  • To be considered for this role the successful applicant must be able to demonstrate that they are eligible to live and carry out the particular role in the UK.
  • The role will be hands on, at times physically demanding, requiring the preparation and movement of large numbers of plant units and extensive glasshouse working.
