About this job:

We are currently seeking a scientist to become a key figure in ensuring the safety to operators and consumers following the use of Syngenta’s crop protection products. Working as part of a team the role requires expertise in the understanding, design, delivery and interpretation of a wide range of residue chemistry data (e.g. analytical methods, crop residue trials and processing and operator exposure studies) to provide inputs to operator and consumer risk assessment positions. The role also requires the evaluation of new guidelines and approaches to data generation to maintain Syngenta’s competitive advantage.


Successful team members have come from a variety of backgrounds – Chemistry, Food Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Agronomy.


This role will include:

  • Providing expertise in the design and conduct of a range of residue studies e.g. magnitude of residue, method validation, storage stability, crop rotation, processing, livestock feeding, operator exposure and dislodgeable residue
  • Working with external contract research organisation partners to deliver complex programmes of work
  • Identifying, defining and solving key scientific problems, particularly on field trial data, analytical data, chromatography
  • Ensuring the delivery and content of GLP residue studies to meet agreed timelines and quality
  • An understanding of current and developing EU regulatory testing guidelines and issues, devising and advocating techno-regulatory strategies to gain and defend product registrations

  • Participating in science projects and communicating the outcomes within Syngenta and at external venues 


To be successful in this role, we believe you will need:

  • To be qualified to a minimum of degree level in chemistry, biochemistry, analytical science, environmental chemistry or related subject
  • Good verbal and written communication and numeracy skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • An ability to work in multiple projects simultaneously and prioritise work effectively
  • Experience of working to tight timelines
  • To be capable of making good technical judgments in a timely manner
  • An ability to solve difficult and complex technical problems
  • Experience of working within multi-disciplinary project teams

Preferable knowledge and experience (though not essential):

  • Experience of analytical chemistry in the agrochemical/pesticide industry or in an industry where exposure data are required
  • Knowledge of the EU pesticide guidelines relating to residue chemistry
